Holy Archdiocese of Zimbabwe

Jurisdiction and Mission

The Holy Archdiocese of Zimbabwe is part of the ancient Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa. Its pastoral jurisdiction extends across Zimbabwe, Angola, Malawi, Botswana, and Mozambique. Within this region, the Archdiocese oversees a network of parishes, missionary centres, and institutions dedicated to worship, education, healthcare, and social service.

Today the Archdiocese includes:

  • More than a dozen parishes and chapels.
  • Missionary centres in Zimbabwe and beyond.
  • Community institutions such as a clinic, nursery school, and technical training programs.

Through these ministries, the Archdiocese works to support both the Orthodox faithful and the wider population with liturgical life, catechesis, education, and humanitarian outreach.

Leadership

The Archdiocese is shepherded by His Eminence Metropolitan George of Zimbabwe, who was elected in October 2004 and enthroned later that same year. He continues the missionary and pastoral legacy of his predecessors while guiding the Church’s expansion into Southern Africa.

Supporting clergy include local priests, deacons, and visiting missionaries who together ensure the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, catechism, and pastoral care across the vast territory.

Councils and Lay Participation

The Archdiocese is supported by ecclesiastical and missionary councils that include clergy and laity working together in service of the Church’s mission. These councils advise on pastoral needs, missionary activity, and community projects, ensuring that the Church remains a living presence in society.

A Living Mission

From its headquarters in Harare, the Archdiocese continues to serve as a beacon of Orthodox witness in Southern Africa. Its mission unites spiritual care with social outreach — strengthening parishes, nurturing youth, supporting schools, and extending compassion to those in need.
