Parish Community in Luanda
The Orthodox presence in Angola is centered in the capital city, Luanda, where the parish of Saint Eleftherios and Venerable Paisios of Mount Athos has been established. Although the church building remains under construction, it serves as a focal point for the Orthodox faithful in the country.
Ecclesiastical Structure
The parish belongs to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa and falls under the jurisdiction of the Holy Archdiocese of Zimbabwe and Angola, led by Metropolitan Seraphim (Kykkotis). The Archdiocese provides pastoral oversight and supports the spiritual needs of Orthodox Christians living in Angola.
The Community in Angola
The Orthodox community in Angola is closely tied to the Greek diaspora and includes both expatriates and local faithful. Community organizations and associations play an important role in strengthening bonds of faith and culture, while also supporting charitable and educational activities.
In addition, cooperation with international institutions such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) highlights the Orthodox Church’s engagement in broader humanitarian efforts within Angola.
Looking Ahead
Though still developing, the Orthodox mission in Angola demonstrates the vitality of the Church’s witness in Africa. The completion of the parish church in Luanda and the continued growth of community life will strengthen Orthodoxy’s presence in the country, offering a spiritual home for both Greeks abroad and Angolans who embrace the faith.
