The Orthodox Church in Malawi

Orthodox Presence in Malawi

The Orthodox Church in Malawi operates under the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa through the Archdiocese of Zimbabwe and its territories. Though small in numbers, the Church here serves as a vital witness of faith and as a hub for both the local Orthodox population and members of the Greek diaspora.

Holy Churches

  • St. Nektarios Church (Limbe) – One of the central parishes of the Orthodox community in Malawi, dedicated to St. Nektarios. It serves as both a parish church and an educational centre for Orthodox instruction.
  • St. George Church and Missionary Centre (Blantyre) – Established in 2003 through the support of the Tseligas family, this parish has become a foundation for missionary work in the region, offering liturgical services, catechesis, and charitable outreach.

Community Life

The Orthodox community in Malawi is closely connected to the Hellenic diaspora, which maintains cultural and spiritual traditions alongside missionary work. A Greek School, attended by around 40 students, provides language and religious education, continuing the heritage of Hellenic Orthodoxy for the younger generation.

Women’s associations and parish councils have also played an important role in strengthening community life, supporting both liturgical functions and charitable activities.

Mission and Outlook

The Orthodox Church in Malawi combines parish worship with education and philanthropy. With missionary centres in Blantyre and Limbe, the Church offers a foundation for future growth while remaining rooted in the living tradition of Orthodoxy in Africa. As the community develops, the mission aims to deepen its role in spiritual guidance, youth formation, and social outreach.
