Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and all Africa

The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa is one of the most ancient centers of Christianity and holds a unique place in the history of the Church. Founded by Saint Mark the Evangelist in the 1st century A.D., the Patriarchate of Alexandria has, for nearly two millennia, served as a beacon of faith, culture, and spiritual guidance for Christians across Africa.

A Pillar of Early Christianity

From its earliest days, the Church of Alexandria was a center of theological learning and missionary outreach. It gave the universal Church great saints, scholars, and martyrs, including Saint Athanasius the Great, defender of the Nicene Creed, and Saint Cyril of Alexandria, a pillar of Orthodox theology. Through its catechetical school, Alexandria shaped the intellectual and spiritual life of the early Christian world.

Patriarchate Today

Today, the Patriarchate of Alexandria is the second in rank among the ancient Orthodox Patriarchates, after the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Its jurisdiction extends over the entire African continent, embracing a rich tapestry of cultures, languages, and peoples. The Patriarchate’s mission combines the preservation of Orthodox tradition with active evangelization, pastoral care, education, and humanitarian service.

The current head of the Church is His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, Theodoros II, who continues the apostolic mission of Saint Mark with devotion, humility, and love.

Mission Across Africa

The Patriarchate is committed to bringing the Gospel to all corners of Africa while supporting the spiritual and social needs of its faithful. Its initiatives include:

  • Parishes and Communities – Establishing Orthodox parishes across African nations to serve both local Orthodox Christians and Greek communities.
  • Education – Schools, theological seminaries, and catechetical programs dedicated to nurturing faith and learning.
  • Charitable Work – Hospitals, clinics, orphanages, and humanitarian programs addressing the needs of the poor and vulnerable.
  • Intercultural Dialogue – Promoting peace, understanding, and cooperation among different faiths and cultures on the continent.

The Church in Zimbabwe

In Zimbabwe, the presence of the Patriarchate reflects both the ancient legacy of the Church and its modern mission. The faithful gather in Orthodox parishes for liturgical life, sacraments, and community activities. Beyond worship, the Church plays a vital role in education, charity, and cultural preservation, strengthening bonds of faith and service.

A Living Witness

The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa stands as a living witness to the universality of Christianity and the enduring power of the Orthodox tradition. Rooted in the apostolic foundation of Saint Mark, it continues to bring light, hope, and love to millions across the African continent.
