Orthodox Presence in Botswana
The Orthodox community in Botswana falls under the jurisdiction of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa through the Archdiocese of Zimbabwe and Angola. The Church’s mission in Botswana continues to grow, serving both members of the Hellenic diaspora and local faithful.
Holy Church of St. Nicholas (Gaborone)
In the capital city of Gaborone, the Orthodox community is centered around the Church of St. Nicholas, which also includes chapels dedicated to St. Parthenios of Lampsakos and St. Peter of Alexandria. The church has been under development to provide a permanent place of worship for the Orthodox faithful of Botswana.
Community Life
The Hellenic Community of Gaborone plays a central role in maintaining cultural and spiritual life. Alongside the parish, the community organizes events, supports Greek language education, and fosters cooperation among Orthodox Christians of various backgrounds. In addition to Greeks, the Orthodox population in Botswana also includes Serbian, Russian, and Bulgarian families, reflecting the international character of Orthodoxy in the region.
Looking Ahead
Although relatively small in number, the Orthodox Church in Botswana continues to be a vibrant presence. With the completion of the St. Nicholas Church and the strengthening of parish activities, the mission aims to provide a stable foundation for worship, education, and community service in Gaborone and beyond.
